Day Three of the 75th Dusi Canoe Marathon saw the country’s top elite paddlers power their way to the finish in Durban, bringing to a close three days of intense competition.
The prestigious race got underway in the waters of the Umsunduzi River on Thursday, with the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Mntomuhle Khawula, officially seeing off the paddlers at the start.
Race legend Andy Birkett and partner Mathew Fenn once again showcased their dominance, crossing the finish line in first place. Msawenkosi Mtolo and Sibonelo Khwela secured second position, while Sandile Mtolo and Bongani Ntinga claimed third.
In the women’s race, favourites Saskia Hockly and Christie McKenzie delivered a strong performance to take top honours. They were followed by Abby Solms and Robyn Groenink in second place, with Amy Hullet and Sarah Jones rounding off the podium in third.
The 75th edition of the race was further boosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, Arts and Culture’s commitment of R200 000 in prize money. This contribution reinforces the province’s continued support for one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting events and provides meaningful incentives for elite paddlers competing in both the men’s and women’s categories.
After three days of gruelling paddling through challenging river conditions and portages, the athletes will now enjoy a well-deserved rest reflecting on a milestone edition of a race that continues to define endurance sport in KwaZulu-Natal
