The International Mother Language Day is currently underway in uMnambithi under Alfred Duma Local Municipality. The celebration also included a heated panel discussion looking at geographical naming and language preservation, geographical names as living heritage and preserving cultural, historical and linguistic heritage. Winners of the My Language, My Lens video competition will be announced as part of the celebration.
Prof. Gugu Mazibuko, a member of the SA National Language Board, urged content creators to use verified and factual information when labeling content on social media. She also said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a challenge because it sometimes spreads false information. She encouraged municipal geographical information system (GIS) teams to provide direct, well-researched information. Poets and writers should avoid misleading or confusing information. Prof. Nobuhle Hlongwa, Chairperson of the Provincial Geographical Names Committee, encouraged the public to engage and collaborate with the committee in naming and correcting place names.
Abraham Dlamini was announced by MEC Khawula as the overall winner of the My Langage, My Lens video competition. His short documentary was about the history of KwaPata in Pietermaritzburg.
